2007 Governor’s Volunteer Award

SOY would like to congratulate two of our mentors who recently received the 2007 Governor’s Volunteer Award.

Tootie Rooker has been a volunteer with SOY since 2003. She has been a visitor at the Polk County Youth Services’ detention center, shelter and over time mentored six girls for SOY! She is currently one of our COP (Children of Prisoners) mentors. Tootie has blessed SOY and countless youth with her uncommon talents in mentoring, teaching, advising, and advocacy.  Her contagious love for young people and her faithful belief in their potential has inspired many and truly made a difference.

Greg Gear has mentored young men since 2002 with wisdom, energy, good humor, tenacity in the face of real adversity, and steadfast faith. His belief in their capacity to grow and change has made a difference in their lives. Greg has mentored 4 boys in his time with SOY, done some visitation and lead a bible discussion group.

We are thankful for this opportunity to see their dedication recognized! We would also like to take this time to say a special thanks to all our volunteers. We are amazed at your heart for these kids and know you are making difference!
