SOY Receives Federal Grant

By Bernie Van Roekel

I am extremely excited to share that SOY has received a federal grant from the Department of Health and Human Services that will allow us to continue mentoring children of prisoners. We have had a mentoring children of prisoners program since July of 2004; however, the funding for this program ended in July. We just received word that we will receive funding, effective October 1, for another mentoring children of prisoners program.

This funding will allow us to continue to impact the lives of children, ages 5-16, who have an incarcerated parent by matching them with an adult mentor. There are approximately 5,000 children in central Iowa who have an incarcerated parent. Our current mentoring children of prisoners has taken place in 9 central Iowa counties. The new grant will allow us to continue in these counties and to expand our mentoring to the Ottumwa area.

We are thankful for the opportunity the Lord has provided to make a difference in the lives of these young people. We ask for your prayer that this program will be successful and that mentors will come forward and give their time to needy children.
